Andra Day

Day arrived sounding like she had stepped out of an older, smokier era, and that timelessness is exactly why I trust her. Rise Up became an anthem because it offers comfort without cheapening pain, and her voice carries a gravity that most contemporary pop avoids. Then she proved she was no one-note artist, collecting a Grammy and a Golden Globe and earning an Oscar nomination for her acting. What interests me is her refusal to be rushed, building a career on craft rather than hype. I suspect her finest work is still ahead, and I genuinely look forward to where that soulful instrument takes her.
