My Take
André De Shields is, frankly, a living legend. Born in Baltimore in 1946 and still commanding the stage well into his seventies, he holds the rare triple of Tony, Grammy, and Emmy. His Hermes in Hadestown was a masterclass, that level of presence and precision at his age borders on unfair. Actor, singer, director, choreographer, he is a multi-disciplinary force with the polish of his University of Wisconsin training. What moves me most is the dignity and total commitment he brings to performance. With film work like The Instigators, he shows no sign of slowing. A true artist, justly beloved.
