My Take

Andrew Sachs earns my deepest affection. A German-born actor who fled the Nazi era and rebuilt his life in Britain, he poured a lifetime of craft into stage, screen, radio, and voice work. Yet it was Manuel, the hapless Spanish waiter in Fawlty Towers, that made him immortal. I love how a single, perfectly judged comic character can outlast everything else and earn an actor a place in cultural memory forever. There is something both humbling and triumphant about that. Sachs left us in 2016 at 86, but Manuel keeps making people laugh, which feels like the finest legacy an actor could ask for.
