My Take

Andy Summers deserves far more credit than he usually gets. To me, the unmistakable sound of the Police was largely his doing, those chiming, delay-soaked chords that gave the band its architecture beneath Sting's melodies. His resume before that, threading through Soft Machine, the Animals and the sixties scene, marks him as a genuine lifer. That he's also a serious photographer only deepens my respect. Born in 1942 and still creating, he embodies a restless curiosity I find quietly inspiring. The guitarist's guitarist, hiding in plain sight.
