My Take

I love that a guy from Higashiosaka could quietly redesign the entire blueprint of Japanese pop. Tsunku started out fronting a rock band, guitar slung low and voice cracked wide open, and then somehow pivoted into the producer who churned out hit after hit for Morning Musume and the whole Hello! Project machine. What kills me is how his songs are weird in the best way, these jagged, hyper-catchy hooks that have no business being as sticky as they are, yet they never leave your head. He clearly never ran out of ideas. And honestly, the thing that gets me most is the grit. Losing his voice would end a lot of careers, but he kept living and breathing music anyway. That stubborn, all-heart obsession is exactly my kind of artist.
