My Take

Ani DiFranco is the embodiment of artistic independence. Releasing more than twenty albums entirely on her own label, Righteous Babe, is a statement no awards shelf can match. I love how she refuses a single genre, folding punk, funk, hip-hop and jazz into folk rock until the category dissolves. Her 2003 win for Best Recording Package feels fitting, because she treated the whole object as art, not just the songs. To me she represents the rare musician who built her own house and never moved out, and that stubborn integrity deserves real respect.
