Anne Helm

Anne Helm appeals to me as a model of the dependable working actress. Rather than chasing stardom, she built a steady run of guest roles across American television, and shared the screen with Elvis Presley in 1962's Follow That Dream. What I find most moving is her second act: retiring from acting to write children's books as Annie Helm. Moving from performing stories to authoring them takes a rare kind of creative humility. To me, careers like hers, quiet, honest, and ending in a gift to young readers, deserve far more warmth than the spotlight usually allows.
