My Take
Annemarie Jacir is, to me, one of the most quietly essential filmmakers working from the Arab world. A Palestinian director, screenwriter, and poet born in Bethlehem, she uses cinema to carry stories that struggle to be heard elsewhere. I admire that her films feel less like entertainment than acts of remembrance and tenderness. Honors like her 2022 honorary doctorate matter, but what moves me is her persistence in simply continuing to create. She belongs to that rare category of artists whose strength is gentle, and whose work doubles as quiet resistance.
