My Take
For me, Ariana Grande is the closest thing modern pop has to a pure instrument. The four-octave range and that whistle register are technical marvels, but what moves me is how she deploys them — always in service of feeling rather than showing off. Her path from teen sitcom actress to Grammy winner to Wicked's leading lady shows an artistic ambition people underestimated for years because of her ponytail and petite frame. And after the tragedies she has endured publicly, the fact that she still sings with such lightness strikes me as quiet courage. I think history will rank her among the great pop vocalists.
