Asha Bhosle

What strikes me most about Asha Bhosle is the sheer endurance of her artistry. Plenty of singers define an era; she defined several, adapting her voice to whatever Indian cinema demanded across the decades while never sounding like anyone but herself. The honors, from the Dadasaheb Phalke Award to the Padma Vibhushan and a place among the BBC's 100 Women, only confirm what listeners already knew: a playback singer, invisible on screen, can still be the emotional center of a film. I find her versatility more impressive than any single hit. She made reinvention look like breathing, and that is the rarest kind of genius.
