My Take

Atom Egoyan is exactly the kind of filmmaker I respect: born in Cairo to an Armenian family, raised in Canada, and carrying all of that displacement into films obsessed with memory and loss. Exotica putting him on the map by setting a fractured story in a strip club tells me he was never interested in the comfortable version of a scene. The roster of honors, from the Order of Canada to a French Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, reads less like a popularity contest and more like institutions slowly catching up to a serious artist. His Armenian heritage clearly fuels the work, and that personal stake is what gives his cinema its weight.
