Audley Harrison

Audley Harrison's gold medal at the 2000 Olympics was a genuine landmark, the first super-heavyweight Olympic gold by a British boxer. Standing 197 cm and university-educated, he could have chosen safer paths, yet he stepped into the hardest arena there is. His professional career drew its share of criticism, but I am less interested in scorecards than in the nerve it takes to keep climbing through the ropes. There is something admirably stubborn about a man who answers doubt with his own fists. For that raw, uncompromising determination, Harrison earns my respect regardless of how the later fights went.
