My Take
Bibens-Dirkx is my favorite kind of baseball story. A pitcher out of a Salem high school and a community college, he spent years grinding through the minors, even pitching in Taiwan, before finally reaching the majors with the Texas Rangers in his thirties. Most players give up long before that. He did not, and that persistence is worth more to me than any prodigy's quick rise. Now coaching, he gets to pass that hard-won knowledge along, which feels exactly right. I will always cheer louder for the late bloomer who refused to quit than for the can't-miss prospect.
