Ayatsugu Yamashita

Catcher is the least portable job in baseball, which is what makes Ayatsugu Yamashita's path worth pausing on. Born in Sapporo in 1992, he has caught in Nippon Professional Baseball for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles and the Chunichi Dragons. Each of those moves meant relearning an entire pitching staff from zero: their habits, their nerve, the thinking behind every sequence. A catcher can hit well and still never play if someone else owns the position, and the reverse is just as true. His awards column is blank. I read the transfers themselves as the record: three organisations decided, in turn, that they wanted him behind the plate.
