Azali Assoumani

Azali Assoumani fascinates me less as a hero than as a study in political endurance. To seize power through a coup and then keep returning to the presidency of a small, coup-prone island nation takes a stubborn pragmatism I won't pretend to admire uncritically. The legitimacy questions are real and shouldn't be waved away. Yet there's something undeniable about a leader who has held a fractured archipelago together across decades. I read him as a survivor first and an ideologue second, and I suspect history's verdict on him is still very much unsettled. That open-endedness is exactly what makes him worth watching.
