My Take
Baz Luhrmann is one of cinema's true love-him-or-loathe-him auteurs, and I land firmly in the love camp. From Romeo + Juliet to Moulin Rouge! to The Great Gatsby and Elvis, he assaults you with maximalist color, anachronistic music and operatic excess, refusing to do anything by halves. That an Australian from Sydney could so boldly remix the Western canon delights me. Even his misfires are more alive than most directors' triumphs.
