My Take

Bernard Tapie was a genuinely larger-than-life figure, and his Wikipedia summary barely contains him. Businessman, politician, occasional actor and singer, even a TV host and minister under Pierre Bérégovoy, he packed several careers into one French life from Paris's 20th arrondissement. I find that restlessness fascinating: most people pick a lane, and he refused to. The 2002 European of the Year honor speaks to a certain magnetism. He passed in 2021, and looking back, he reads less like a tidy success story than a force of nature who kept reinventing himself, for better or worse, right to the end.
