My Take
Bernardo Bertolucci is, for me, a director who wrote poetry in light. The 1988 sweep of Best Director and Adapted Screenplay for The Last Emperor is the headline, but what holds me is his sensuous color and his gift for placing private fate against the sweep of history. The trophies, from the Sutherland to the Golden Globes, are almost beside the point; the films themselves outlast their awards. Since his death in 2018 his name is fixed in cinema history, and to me that is the truest measure of a filmmaker, far beyond any statuette he collected.
