Daisuke Takahashi

I'll be honest, the first time I watched Daisuke Takahashi skate I forgot I was supposed to be scoring an athletic event, because the man turns ice into a stage. He's not the towering type at 165cm, and he never relied on out-jumping everyone the way the big-air guys do, he just glides out there and makes every edge feel like a sentence in some story you didn't know you wanted to hear. There's this smoky, musical quality to his blades that most skaters spend a lifetime chasing. What really gets me, though, is that after reaching the top in men's singles he didn't just coast, he reinvented himself by switching to ice dance later in his career, which takes a kind of restless guts I deeply respect. A craftsman hiding behind a charming smile.
