My Take

Bill Ward is the unsung engine of something enormous. As Black Sabbath's original drummer, he helped co-found heavy metal itself in 1969 alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, and his swinging, jazz-tinged feel is, to my ear, what gave those crushing riffs their groove. He never courted the spotlight the way a frontman does, but the weight of Sabbath sits on his timing. That he kept making solo records, the latest as recently as 2015, tells me he is still chasing his own sound rather than coasting on legend. I tip my hat to this Birmingham man for building a foundation the whole genre still stands on.
