My Take
Black Francis is one of those figures whose influence dwarfs his chart numbers, and that is exactly why I admire him. As the voice of the Pixies he gave alternative rock its quiet-loud blueprint, the scream that a generation of bands quietly borrowed. What impresses me more is the refusal to coast: fifteen solo albums, a new band in the Catholics, a stubborn loyalty to his own sound long after the spotlight cooled. The Boston roots feel audible in that jagged, restless guitar. He never chased reinvention for applause, only for honesty, and I find that kind of artistic stubbornness genuinely moving.
