My Take

Bob Marley is one of those rare artists where the music genuinely outlived the man — and I mean that in the most literal, spiritual sense. He died at just 36 from cancer, but "Redemption Song," "No Woman, No Cry," and "One Love" have never stopped playing somewhere on this planet, every single day since 1981. What gets me is how he made reggae feel universal without ever sanding off its Jamaican soul: the Rastafarian faith, the political fire, the raw love — it's all right there in the grooves. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him in 1994, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award followed in 2001, both long overdue tributes. I think his greatest achievement is harder to measure than any award, though: he made an entire genre of music a vehicle for genuine human dignity.
