My Take
Tank, born Lü Jianzhong, is one of those Taiwanese artists I think deserves more attention outside the Mandarin-speaking world. The title of his 2006 debut, Fighting: The Law of Surviving, tells you something about his outlook, and the fact that he writes as well as sings makes him a true craftsman rather than a vehicle for someone else's words. Mandopop has slowly seeped into wider awareness, and it is artists like him, grounded and earnest, who give the scene its weight. I picture him as a singer who leans into heavy, heartfelt ballads. I am genuinely rooting for his road to keep widening.
