My Take

Grace Jones is, to my mind, the most complete argument that persona can be an art form in itself. From Spanish Town to the Paris runways of Saint Laurent and Kenzo, she never softened herself to fit a market; she made the market come to her angles. The androgyny, the geometry of that face, the menace in the voice — every later pop provocateur is working from her blueprint, usually with less commitment. What I respect most is the consistency: decades on, she remains uncompromising rather than nostalgic. The Order of Jamaica feels almost too polite an honor for someone this gloriously untamed.
