Carlos Lehder

Carlos Lehder is not a man I can admire, but he is impossible to ignore. As a co-founder of the Medellín Cartel and the first major trafficker extradited to the United States, he sits at the dark center of an era that reshaped two continents. What unsettles me most is the ordinariness of his origins, a German-Colombian upbringing that somehow funneled into one of history's most destructive criminal enterprises. His 33 years in prison and eventual release in 2020 read less like redemption than like a grim epilogue. I find his story valuable precisely as a warning about how ambition unmoored from conscience corrodes everything it touches.
