Carlos Ponce

Carlos Ponce is one of those guys who never became a household name but clearly earned the respect of everyone who worked with him — the kind of career that tells you more about grit than glory. Born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico in 1959, he came up through a baseball culture where the sport is practically religion, and he carved out a professional path as a first baseman that eventually led him far beyond U.S. shores. What I find genuinely cool is that instead of fading out after his playing days, he took his knowledge to Taiwan and became a coach for the Wei Chuan Dragons in the Chinese Professional Baseball League. That's a guy who loves the game enough to chase it across the Pacific — and that kind of commitment to the craft deserves a lot more attention than it usually gets.
