Casey Mears

Casey Mears interests me as a study in persistence. Born into the Mears racing dynasty, he could have coasted on the name, but instead he kept his hands on the wheel of NASCAR's top series even as full-time rides gave way to part-time runs. I'm less moved by trophy counts than by the refusal to quit, and that's exactly what I see here. A driver still competing in his forties, choosing the grind of the track over comfort, tells me everything about his love for the sport. That kind of stubborn devotion is, to me, more admirable than any single victory.
