Catalina Sandino Moreno

Catalina Sandino Moreno announced herself in the most demanding way possible: a debut performance in Maria Full of Grace that won the Silver Bear and earned an Academy Award nomination. Most actors spend a decade chasing what she touched at the start, and that says something about an instinct you can't really teach. The painter's background, the studies in Bogotá, suggest someone who works from the inside out, building a character the way you'd build an image with color and patience. To me she's part of a quietly important wave of Latin American actresses crossing into world cinema on their own terms, and her restraint is exactly what makes her watchable.
