My Take
CiCi Bellis is, to me, one of tennis's most poignant what-ifs. Beating a seeded player at the US Open at just fifteen, then climbing to world No. 35, she carried the weight of being American tennis's bright young hope. That injuries forced her into early retirement is the cruel arithmetic of the sport, but I refuse to read her story as a loss. To glimpse the top of the world that young is a rare gift. I find myself rooting for whatever she builds next, certain that the same steel that took her so high will serve her well beyond the court.
