My Take
Céline Sciamma is among the directors I trust most right now. Born in Pontoise outside Paris, she has built a body of work devoted to the inner lives of girls and women and to the much-discussed female gaze. Tomboy, Girlhood, and especially Portrait of a Lady on Fire show a filmmaker who lets silence and a single look carry enormous emotional weight. Decorated with European Film Awards and the Order of Arts and Letters, she never raises her voice to be heard. I love that restraint. She seems to change, one quiet frame at a time, how we are allowed to see.
