My Take

Charlene Choi was, for a while, one of Asia's biggest pop idols as half of the Hong Kong duo Twins, and her career has aged better than most bubblegum stars manage. Born in Vancouver, she carries a certain cosmopolitan polish, and what impresses me is how she pivoted from teen-idol fame into serious, well-regarded acting roles. Plenty of singers ride a wave of cuteness and vanish; far fewer reinvent themselves as respected actresses and stay on the front line for two decades. Watching someone grow from manufactured idol into a performer who wins on craft is, frankly, a really satisfying kind of career arc to follow.
