My Take
To me Charlie Benante is a genuine innovator, not just a great drummer. Out of the Bronx, he anchored Anthrax for decades while helping popularize double bass drumming and the blast beat, techniques that reshaped extreme metal. What impresses me most is that he is also the band's principal songwriter, so the man building the rhythm is also drafting the songs, holding the entire blueprint of the sound. Add occasional guitar work and you have a frighteningly complete musician. That he still delivers that workload today only deepens my respect for him.
