My Take
Chaz Bono has lived one of the most public lives in America, on television as the child of Sonny and Cher before he could choose any of it, and what moves me is how he converted that scrutiny into service. Coming out as a trans man under that spotlight took a courage most public figures never have to summon, and the 2012 GLAAD Stephen F. Kolzak Award recognized exactly that. I also admire that he refused to be only a symbol, continuing to work as a writer, musician, and actor and insisting on being judged by craft as well as identity. His example widened the road for many people.
