My Take

Choi Ji-eun earns my admiration for the grit it took to medal in Korean figure skating during the Kim Yu-na era. Born in Daejeon in 1988, she collected five national medals and a junior Grand Prix bronze in Hungary, no small thing when one transcendent star dominated all the headlines. What I find genuinely moving, though, is what came after: she went to Korea University and then stayed on the ice as a coach, passing her hard-won technique to the next generation. I have always valued the people who choose to give back quietly over those who chase the spotlight, and she clearly belongs to the former.

Choi Ji-eun (Korean: 최지은; born May 25, 1988) is a South Korean figure skating coach and former competitor. She is a five-time South Korean national medalist, having won two silver and three bronze medals. She won the bronze medal at the 2006 ISU Junior Grand Prix in Hungary and reached the free skate at four ISU Championships.
