My Take

Christian Petzold is, for my money, the most quietly essential filmmaker working in Germany today. The Berlin School label undersells what he actually does, which is build restrained, unsettling human dramas that lodge in your chest and refuse to leave for days. His recurring partnerships with Nina Hoss and Paula Beer give his work a rare continuity of trust, and that Silver Bear for Barbara felt entirely earned. What I value is his discipline. No spectacle, no manipulative scoring, just precise observation that trusts the viewer. Coming from a modest town like Hilden to national honors, he has done it all on his own restrained terms.
