My Take

Christopher Young is a composer I associate with dread, in the best way. Hellraiser, Sinister, The Grudge, Drag Me to Hell: he scored some of the most unnerving horror of the last few decades, and horror scoring is brutally hard to do well. It's easy to lean on cheap stingers; Young builds actual atmosphere. The fact that he's also a music educator tells me he thinks about craft, not just effect. I tend to underrate how much a film's fear lives in its score until I imagine those movies silent. His name in the credits is a quiet promise the music will do real work.
