My Take
Cory Booker interests me because his resume could have excused him from ever doing hard things, and he chose them anyway. Stanford and a Rhodes Scholarship usually lead to a corner office, not to the Newark city council and the mayor's office of a struggling city. Whatever you make of his politics, the through-line is consistent: he bets on proximity, living where the problems are rather than theorizing about them from a distance. As New Jersey's first African-American senator he carries symbolic weight, but I find those street-level instincts more telling than the symbolism. American politics rewards performers; Booker, at his best, is a practitioner.
