My Take

Crystal Gayle had the unenviable task of being Loretta Lynn's little sister and still carved out a completely distinct identity, which is no small feat. Where Loretta was raw Appalachian grit, Crystal went silky and pop-crossover, and 'Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue' is one of those perfectly produced late-1970s records that still sounds gorgeous on the radio. And of course there's the hair, that almost ankle-length curtain became as iconic as any of her songs. She proved country could be elegant and chart-friendly without losing its heart, and I respect how she stepped out of a giant shadow.

Overview

Crystal Gayle (born Brenda Gail Webb, January 9, 1951) is an American country singer from Paintsville, Kentucky, and the younger sister of country legend Loretta Lynn. She achieved crossover pop and country success with her 1977 signature hit 'Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue', which won her a Grammy Award. Known almost as much for her famously floor-length hair as for her smooth voice, she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a string of number-one country singles.
