My Take

Dan Auerbach is, for me, the sound of grit turned into craft. Coming out of Akron's rust-belt landscape, he built The Black Keys with Patrick Carney into a global force using little more than fuzzed-out blues, two stubborn musicians and thirteen albums of conviction. I admire how he refused to chase trends, letting the dirt stay in the tone. His work as a producer is just as telling, drawing out other artists' best instincts. He strikes me as a true journeyman in the best sense, someone who treats music as a trade and keeps quietly mastering it.
