My Take

Daron Payne is the kind of athlete I quietly root for. A 188 cm defensive tackle out of Birmingham, he won national titles with Alabama in 2015 and 2017 before going first round to Washington in 2018. The trenches are thankless work, all grit and collision with little glory, yet Payne built a real career there by sheer physical will. What impresses me is the unbroken arc from Shades Valley High to a powerhouse program to the NFL, no shortcuts. I admire players who anchor a defense rather than chase highlights, and Payne reads to me as exactly that immovable, dependable wall.
