My Take
Dave Cowens is one of my favorite kinds of athletes: the undersized center who refused to play small. At 6'9", he banged with the giants of his era, won Rookie of the Year in 1971 and MVP in 1973, and anchored those great Boston Celtics teams with relentless motor rather than sheer size. I love that he leaned on hustle, mobility, and grit instead of physical dominance, and that he later coached, staying a basketball lifer. Players who win on effort over measurables age beautifully in memory, and Cowens is exactly that sort of enduring figure to me.
