Dave Wakeling

Dave Wakeling matters to me as a voice of two-tone ska, that joyous, defiant sound born in Birmingham. With the Beat and General Public, he made music that got people of every background dancing together, which in late-1970s Britain was a quiet act of rebellion. After parting with Ranking Roger, he kept the flame alive with the English Beat, still touring decades on. I respect that endurance: the bands that rode a trend faded long ago, while Wakeling kept playing on conviction. To me he's proof that pop with a conscience can outlast almost anything, refusing to grow cynical.
