My Take

David Chase is, to me, the man who forced everyone to take television seriously. With The Sopranos he detonated the old idea that TV was cinema's lesser cousin, and the seven Emmys, three of them for writing, plus a Directors Guild award only confirm the craft. But what I respect most is his refusal to flatter the audience. That divisive cut-to-black ending was an act of pure authorial nerve, the kind most creators would never dare. A Leo born in 1945, he has the conviction to trust his own instinct over applause. The golden age of TV genuinely starts with him.

David Henry Chase (born August 22, 1945) is an American writer, producer, and director. A recipient of seven Primetime Emmy Awards, he is best known for being the creator, head writer, and executive producer of the HBO drama The Sopranos, which aired for six seasons between 1999 and 2007. Chase has also produced and written for shows such as The Rockford Files, I'll Fly Away, and Northern Exposure.
