My Take
David Lee Roth is, to me, the purest argument that being a frontman is a craft unto itself. Plenty of singers in the hard rock era had better technical voices; almost none understood showmanship the way Diamond Dave did. The high kicks, the wisecracks, the carnival-barker charisma made Van Halen feel like a party rather than a concert. What I find underrated is his solo run, with multiple Gold and Platinum records proving he wasn't just riding a great guitarist's coattails. Even his detour into radio made sense; the man simply needs a microphone and a crowd. Rock has never produced a more entertaining loudmouth.
