My Take

What draws me to David Payne is the quiet loyalty of his path. Born in Cincinnati, raised in nearby Wyoming, and developed at the University of Cincinnati, he never had to leave home to chase the 110 and 400 meter hurdles at a high level. Hurdling fascinates me precisely because it rewards rhythm and nerve over raw speed, and at 183 cm with that stride he must have eaten up the spaces between the barriers.
