My Take

Dean Ashton is one of football's great what-ifs, and that haunts me a little. A 186 cm centre forward with genuine class, he scored freely for Crewe, Norwich and West Ham and earned an England cap before injury cruelly cut him down in his prime. I always wonder how high he might have climbed had his body cooperated. What I admire now is the second act, his sharp, articulate work as a commentator, where the intelligence he showed on the pitch translates into reading the game for the rest of us. Talent denied one stage often finds another.
