My Take
Demi Lovato matters to me less for the chart positions than for the honesty. Plenty of Disney alumni made the leap to pop stardom; very few did it while openly documenting their struggles and recovery in real time, knowing millions of young fans were watching. That takes a kind of courage that honors like the GLAAD Vanguard Award can only partially capture. And the voice itself is colossal — one of the truly great pop vocal instruments of this generation. Every comeback has felt earned rather than manufactured, and I find myself rooting for the person just as much as the artist.
