My Take

To me, Derek Kolstad is one of modern action cinema's quiet architects. Creating the John Wick franchise in 2014 and writing its first two sequels is no small feat; he conjured an entire underworld mythology, complete with its own rules and economy, out of a deceptively simple premise. What impresses me is that he doesn't just stage gunfights, he writes grief and code-of-honor into a near-silent protagonist. There's a pleasing gap, too, between his earnest Wisconsin and Taylor University background and the stylish violence he dreams up. As a builder of worlds and tone, he has earned my genuine respect.
