My Take

Despina Olympiou draws me in simply by being a singer from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. There is a romance to voices born on islands, shaped by sea and sun. She is a genuine talent, beloved in both Cyprus and Greece, and in 2013 she represented Cyprus at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo. Carrying a nation's pride onto a continent-wide stage is no small feat, and I imagine her voice as clear as that famous Aegean blue. She remains active and visible online today, which I respect. Artists who pour the soul of their homeland into song are exactly the kind I cherish.
