Dominic Raab

What strikes me about Dominic Raab is how often he was handed the burning buildings of British politics. A Cambridge-trained lawyer who climbed to Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and Lord Chancellor, he spent his career in the most contested rooms during the Brexit years. He is a genuinely divisive figure, and I do not pretend otherwise. But I respect a certain steeliness in someone who keeps taking the hard, thankless briefs rather than the safe ones. Whatever one thinks of his politics, he is a study in how conviction and combativeness can both define and limit a public career.
